Thank you, Sam Berns – 16 Jan 2014

Sam Berns

Progeria is a rare genetic childhood disorder characterized by the appearance of accelerated aging.

This incurable disease is extremely rare, with an estimated 250 to 350 children suffering from the disease worldwide.

Patients with progeria experience premature aging, which leads to growth failure, loss of body fat and hair, aged looking-skin, stiffness of joints, bone loss, hip dislocation, general heart disease and stroke at an early age.

Most recently, we mourn the passing of Sam Bern who was the public face of progeria. While most children with the disease are expected to live only until age 13, Sam Berns lived to 17.

His zest for life despite living with the debilitating disease is both courageous and inspiring.

Do spare 13 minutes of your life to watch the video of his speech 3 months before his passing on 10 Jan 2014, explaining in his own endearing way his dislike for obstacles and his strategies for beating them.

When you feel beaten down and discouraged in life, look around you for real accounts of grit, purpose and optimism.  Sam Berns is that one person that Empower Coaching salutes.
